With the holiday season upon us, we asked our team about their favorite baking moments from their childhood. Here’s Ruben's story.
This baking story starts in 1999 and ends in 2001-2002.
Ruben and his mom had an oven from the 1970s - they were warned by their landlord that the oven door got jammed.
It was Christmas 1999 and Ruben’s mom made sugar cookies, however, the oven door got stuck. Paying to get the door open and fixed wasn’t at the top of Ruben’s mom’s list, so the door, and the cookies, stayed in the oven for years.
A few years down the line, Ruben’s mom was dating a man in the military who was able to pry the oven door open.
First grader Ruben really wanted those cookies, despite their length of time they were chillin in that oven. Ruben grabbed one of the gray, fossilized cookies and took a bite out of it.
If gray was a flavor, that is what those cookies tasted like. Liquid dust in his mouth.
Obviously, that experience didn’t deter Ruben from trying more cookies (and dough) in his life. He’s now working for Big Dipper Dough and was able to buy his family a new oven and he’s so incredibly thankful for that.
